About Alpaca & Baby Alpaca — The Fiber Behind Our Work

High in the Andes Mountains of Peru, at over 14,000 feet above sea level, we raise our own herd of Suri alpacas in the same environment where these remarkable animals have lived for centuries. The clean mountain air, high altitude, and natural grazing conditions create the ideal setting for producing one of the world’s most luxurious and functional natural fibers.

Our alpacas are Suri alpacas, known for their exceptionally silky, smooth, and lustrous fleece. Unlike many companies that purchase alpaca fiber on the open market, we are involved in every step—from raising and caring for our animals to selecting and preserving only the finest quality fibers for our own collections.

The Difference Between Alpaca and Baby Alpaca

The softest and most prized fiber is called baby alpaca. This does not refer to the age of the animal, but rather the first and second shearings, when the fleece is at its finest and most luxurious. We carefully keep this baby alpaca quality exclusively for our own garments, blankets, and accessories.

After these first two shearings, alpacas continue producing fiber for many years. Over the next 18 years of their lives, the fiber becomes stronger and slightly coarser. This is known as adult alpaca. While still valuable, it does not offer the same next-to-skin softness as baby alpaca. We sell this adult alpaca fiber to companies around the world, while reserving the finest baby alpaca only for our own products so we can maintain the level of comfort and quality our customers expect.

Naturally Advanced Performance Fiber

Alpaca is one of nature’s most advanced performance fibers. Each strand contains a hollow core, allowing it to provide exceptional warmth while remaining lightweight and breathable. This unique structure helps regulate body temperature, keeping you warm in cold weather without overheating. Unlike many traditional wools, alpaca allows you to stay comfortable indoors and outdoors without constantly adding or removing layers.

Alpaca is also naturally:

  • Hypoallergenic – free of lanolin, making it ideal for sensitive skin

  • Moisture-wicking – draws moisture away from the body for comfort during activity

  • Antimicrobial – helps resist bacteria and odors

  • Odor-resistant – does not absorb smells easily and stays fresher longer

Because of these properties, alpaca garments are perfect for travel and outdoor activities. Many customers find that simply placing their alpaca garment in fresh air or sunlight naturally refreshes it between wears.

Ideal for Travel, Outdoors, and Everyday Luxury

Whether you are traveling, skiing, hiking, or simply going about your day, alpaca offers unmatched versatility. It keeps you warm without feeling heavy, regulates temperature to prevent overheating, and stays fresh even after extended wear. Skiers especially appreciate alpaca because it provides consistent warmth without the cycle of overheating, removing layers, and getting cold again that often happens with other wools.

Naturally Dyed, Authentically Crafted

To complement this extraordinary fiber, we use all-natural dyes to create the rich, lasting colors found in our garments and blankets. These dyes preserve the integrity of the fiber while reflecting the natural beauty and traditions of the Andes.

From the highlands where our alpacas are raised to the hands of the artisans who craft each piece, every item reflects generations of knowledge, care, and respect for this remarkable fiber. The result is not only exceptional comfort and performance, but timeless pieces designed to be worn, used, and appreciated for years to come.
